7 Stoic Maxims

Summarizing key Stoic themes simply

Welcome to The Stoa Letter, the newsletter on Stoic theory and practice.

Today, I’m sharing 7 Stoic maxims I find useful – the kind of thing that is invaluable to keep on hand.

πŸ›οΈ Theory

  • Things in themselves cannot harm you, only your judgment of them can.

  • It is always within your power to see things as they are.

  • Life does not happen to you. Impressions happen to you. Life happens within.

  • Find freedom by desiring what is up to you.

  • Let externals come, let them be, let them go.

  • Character is fate.

  • Direct reality when you can; Harmonize with it when you can’t.

🎯 Action

During the day, simply revisit one of the maxims above – or one of your own – and live by it.
